Question & AnswersCategory: WritingPublishers allergic to older female protagonists
Terril L. Shorb asked 5 years ago

Hello Chelsea, My novel features a female protagonist who is in her late 40s. Teetering as I am now on the precipice of vaulting into the agent-query abyss I pause and wonder if industry intimations are true about preferring younger women as principle characters? Certainly and sadly we hear this about the film industry. But in publishing literary novels, too? Thanks much in advance for your thoughts on this! Warm regards, Terril L. Shorb

Hi Terril, As long as the story is compelling and well executed, then the age of a female protagonist should not hurt you in finding an agent who represents adult literary fiction. Query away and good luck! Best wishes, Chelsea
